Course description

Traliant’s Global Anti-Money Laundering training is a 25-minute foundational course that provides an overview of international anti-money laundering (AML) compliance obligations and sanctions. The course explores how to comply with global AML laws, including requirements under the US Bank Secrecy Act, OFAC (Office of Foreign Assets Control) and FinCEN (Financial Crimes Enforcement Network), as well as Canada’s FinTRAC and Ireland’s Proceeds of Crime Act. It also covers high-risk countries, regions and Specifically Designated Nationals (SDNs) under the US Sanctions list.

Traliant also offers a shorter, 15-minute Anti-Money Laundering (AML) course designed for domestic organizations that operate in the US without an international presence. This version provides a concise overview of US-specific obligations under the Bank Secrecy Act, FinCEN and other related AML regulations.

Frequently asked questions

What is AML training, and why is it important?
  • Minimize legal and financial risks: Money laundering carries with it severe penalties for both individuals and organizations. Training helps to protect your company from legal and financial repercussions.
  • Maintain a positive reputation and build trust: Being associated with money laundering can damage a company's reputation and erode trust with customers, investors, and other stakeholders.
  • Create a culture of compliance and ethical conduct: Training helps to promote a culture where employees understand the importance of following AML regulations and reporting suspicious activity.
Why should you train your employees on anti-money laundering?
  • Equip employees with the knowledge to act: Training provides employees with the necessary knowledge to identify and report suspicious activity, which can help to prevent money laundering schemes.
  • Strengthen your compliance program: A robust AML compliance program is essential for any organization. Training is a key component of ensuring that your company meets its compliance obligations.
  • Foster a strong culture of ethics and integrity: Training helps to promote a culture where employees understand that ethical conduct and compliance are paramount.
How often should AML training be conducted, and which organizations should provide it?
Ongoing AML training is essential for reducing risk and promoting a culture of compliance. Because AML risks can arise in many parts of an organization, regular training for all employees is strongly encouraged. Most organizations choose to conduct this training during onboarding and refresh it annually, or more frequently when roles or regulations change.

While some industries such as financial institutions have formal obligations to provide AML training, any organization that engages in financial transactions or operates in higher-risk areas should treat it as a key component of its risk management strategy. Globally, employee AML training is recognized as a best practice to help identify and report suspicious activity, and organizations should ensure their programs align with expectations in the regions where they operate.
What are the stages of money laundering?
  • Placement: The initial stage, where the illegally obtained funds are introduced into the financial system.
  • Layering: Complex transactions are used to obscure the source of the funds and make them harder to trace.
  • Integration: The final stage, where the laundered funds are integrated into the legitimate economy and used for criminal activities.
Why is Know Your Customer (KYC) so important in preventing money laundering?
  • Identifying high-risk customers: KYC processes can help to identify individuals or entities who may be involved in money laundering.
  • Monitoring customer transactions: KYC procedures help organizations to monitor their customers' transactions and to identify any suspicious activity.
What can employees do if they suspect that someone is engaging in money laundering?
Employees who suspect money laundering activity should immediately report their concerns to their supervisor, the company's compliance department, or their organization's ethics hotline. It's essential to be aware of your company's policies and reporting procedures.
